The 21st edition of the SIMULTAN Festival begins with a simple but unsettling question: what do we lose when everything becomes perfect? At a time when technology promises maximum resolution — clearer images, purer sounds and more efficient processes — Against Resolution proposes friction, imperfection and unfinished thinking as legitimate critical practices.
Bringing together theorists and practitioners, this year's edition opens a space between touch and algorithm, between gesture and instrument.
SIMULTAN XXI — a workshop for an uncertain future
SIMULTAN began in 2005 out of curiosity about new artistic forms and a desire to explore a territory in which video art and sound experimentation were finding their place within an emerging local scene. The festival has evolved with the spaces, situations and communities that shaped it, guided by the belief that making art and creating a context for art are the same gesture.
Twenty editions later, technology is no longer a novelty but an ambient medium. The question is no longer only how we use it, but how we think with it and remain responsive, honest and authentic when tools multiply and answers seem to arrive before the questions.
2026: building, connection and dialogue
Throughout the year, SIMULTAN is developing artistic co-productions with local and European organisations. These new works will circulate through the network of international partners in the years ahead.
In parallel, workshops and mentoring sessions for young artists and students explore digital tools as means of expression in interactive audiovisual production and performance. The programme supports the development of the local arts scene, strengthens production capacity and creates new international connections.
From September 24–27, with side programmes continuing through October 4, the festival brings these directions together through presentations, roundtables and meetings between practitioners, theorists and the public. The artistic programme is accompanied by the launch of a printed publication tracing the festival's history through essays, interviews and critical texts by participants and contributors.
This year's edition returns to MX — the Corneliu Mikloși Museum, a venue with a rich history that is entering the final stage of its transformation into a centre for art, technology and innovation.
