How do you make experimental electronic music that can survive the technology it was made with?
Art Zoyd Studios is a centre for musical creation based in Valenciennes, France, dedicated to contemporary and experimental music involving electronics and new technologies. Its history is closely linked to Art Zoyd, the pioneering experimental music group founded in 1969, which established its own recording and creation studio in 1987. From the late 1990s, the studio progressively developed into a centre for artistic residencies, production, research and experimentation, opening its facilities and expertise to guest composers and artists.
Today, Art Zoyd Studios supports contemporary and experimental creation through artistic residencies combining research, experimentation and production, with the dedicated support of a computer music designer (réalisateur en informatique musicale), one of the centre’s defining features. Alongside its support for new creation, the centre is committed to the transmission and preservation of musical works, drawing on Art Zoyd’s unique artistic legacy while remaining firmly focused on contemporary practices and future forms of musical creation.
At SIMULTAN, Kasper T. Toeplitz, Associate Composer at Art Zoyd Studios since 2019 and a long-time collaborator of the centre, will talk about its work from an artist’s perspective — from developing new electronic music to the practical question of how this music can remain playable over time.
Kasper T. Toeplitz is a composer and musician working with electric bass and live electronics, across the often-separated territories of contemporary composition, electronic music and noise. He has collaborated with institutions including IRCAM, GRM, GMEM and Radio France, as well as artists such as Éliane Radigue, Zbigniew Karkowski and Phill Niblock. In 2004, he developed the BassComputer, a hybrid of electric bass and computer that became central to his compositional and live practice. He has been Associate Composer at Art Zoyd Studios since 2019.
