Venus Blue is a hybrid painting/electronic music work by composer Kasper T. Toeplitz and painter Daria Gabriel, inspired by the planet Venus as both symbol and environmental metaphor. Gabriel’s original painting on aluminium panels, rich in textured materials, becomes a moving score, its filmed visuals interacting live with Toeplitz’s bass and electronics. Rather than juxtaposing music and painting, the two media are conceived together, each influencing the other. The piece explores temporality: painting, usually grasped at a glance, is instead slowly revealed through video projection, mirroring music’s accumulating, evolving structures and merging into one immersive, poetic experience addressing climate change and environmental degradation.
As a composer and electric bass player, Kasper Toeplitz has developed his work in the no man’s land between “academic” electronic composition (orchestra, ensembles, opera) and noise music. He works as much with major state institutions (GMEM, GRM, IRCAM, Radio-France) as with experimental or unclassifiable musicians such as Eliane Radigue, Zbigniew Karkowski, Dror Feiler, Phill Niblock, Z’ev or Vomir, among others. He often collaborates with contemporary dance and his music is performed — whether in solo concerts or by various ensembles — throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia. Since 2019, he has been Associate Composer at Art Zoyd Studios.
Daria Gabriel is a visual artist who has worked in the areas of painting, photography, film, video, sound, installation, set design and performance. She holds an MFA from Claremont Graduate University in Los Angeles and has exhibited internationally in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Mexico City, Paris, Berlin, New Orleans, Chicago, Amsterdam and New York City.
