Founded in 2000 by Dieter Kovačič (dieb13), klingt.org is an independent online platform and server dedicated to experimental and improvised music. For more than twenty-five years, it has provided a digital home for a heterogeneous network of artists, musicians, filmmakers, organisers, publications and software projects, offering web space, mailing lists, an event calendar and an extensive online music archive. Long before feeds, algorithms and streaming platforms became the default architecture of online culture, klingt.org developed its own decentralised network for sharing music, information and resources.

In this presentation, its founder and operator dieb13 traces the platform’s history and the community that grew around it, looking at what it means to build and maintain an independent digital infrastructure for experimental culture over more than two decades.

dieb13 (Dieter Kovačič) is an Austrian improvisation musician in the field of turntablism. Since the late 1980s, he has been continuously working on transforming cassette recorders, vinyl, CDs and hard discs into instruments.
